  3. Maintenance-free facade cladding: what’s the best choice?

Maintenance-free façade cladding

What’s the best choice?

This is what you have to keep in mind

Wouldn’t it be amazing to have a beautiful facade that requires almost no maintenance? No more sanding and painting, just imagine that… Maintenance-free facades may sound to good to be true, but it is really possible! There are many options available if you’re looking for virtually maintenance-free façade cladding. We’ll tell you all about it!

There’s quite a lot of choice in low-maintenance facade cladding. Materials such as concrete, stone wool fibres, fibre cement or plastics are known as virtually maintenance-free. If you compare that to materials such as wood, it’s clear that these types of facade cladding require a lot less maintenance. Wood ages and can peel off, and it needs sanding and painting every few years. That’s quite a lot of maintenance!

Maintenance-free façade cladding: fact or fable?

Yet, there are also quite some differences in facade boards that are known to be low-maintenance. On plastic facade cladding, you might experience a white haze or white marks. If you go for plastic facade boards with a wood grain texture, then you will need to take into account that contamination in the grooves may occur over time. Sometimes they also require the use of special cleaning agents. In general, plastic facade cladding requires cleaning for multiple times a year.

Some types of facade cladding, including fibre cement are somewhat softer than others. When this is the case, dirt can be easily absorbed. When you wait too long before removing dirt, it unfortunately gets virtually impossible to remove the dirt completely.

The best choice in maintenance-free façade cladding

Rockpanel boards, which require only a minimum of maintenance, are made of compressed stone wool fibres.  This makes it a natural product that is both robust and light. The boards have a water-based coating. Cleaning them once a year with just some water is sufficient! With a ProtectPlus coating (standard for Rockpanel Woods, Stones, Chameleon, Brilliant and Metallics optional for Colours), the boards become even more self-cleaning. Rain will wash away almost all of the dirt.

Rockpanel Natural façade boards are made of stone wool fibres and don’t have a coating. These boards are supposed to weather in a natural way. Information on how you should clean all the different types of Rockpanel facade cladding can be found in this article.
